Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
Every day in the UK, 10 children and young people will receive the devastating news that they have cancer. Of those 10, two will not survive. Of those that survive, many will have long-term side-effects that may significantly impact their lives forever.
4,200 children and young adults are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year. There are around 1,900 new cases of childhood cancer in the UK every year.
The most common childhood cancers are: leukaemia, brain, CNS and intracranial tumours and lymphomas.
Signs and symptoms of cancer in children:
Cancer symptoms can be very similar to those of other childhood illnesses. There are many different possible symptoms. Take your child to the GP if you notice something that is not normal for them.

The types of cancer affecting children can be quite different from the cancers that affect teenagers and young adults (TYA); TYA cancers are different again from the types of cancer that typically affect adults aged 25+.

- Lumps, bumps and swellings
- Unexplained tiredness
- Mole changes
- Persistent pain
- Significant weight change

Having any of these symptoms doesn’t mean you definitely have cancer but if you’re worried you should speak to your GP.
If a child or young person is diagnosed with cancer, they and their families must get the treatment and support they need to ensure the best possible outcomes.
