Beechcroft Care Home

Healthwatch Halton carried out an Enter & View visit to Beechcroft Care Home in Runcorn in October 2025. We spent time speaking with residents, relatives and staff to understand how people are supported, see daily life in the home, and identify what is working well along with any areas for improvement.

We found Beechcroft to be a friendly and welcoming home, with residents appearing comfortable and well cared for. Staff across both units were warm and attentive, and families told us they felt reassured by the support their relatives receive.

Beechcroft is split into two areas — Oak Unit and Ash Unit — offering residential, nursing and dementia care. Oak Unit had a lively and upbeat atmosphere during our visit, with residents enjoying a group activity session led by the Activities team. Staff interactions were positive, patient and respectful, and people seemed relaxed and at ease.

Ash Unit was quieter and calm, though the décor and layout were more dated. Some areas would benefit from refurbishment, clearer signage and improvements to dementia-friendly design. The provider has plans for ongoing environmental improvements across the home.

Residents and families spoke positively about the food, daily routines and the kindness of staff. People told us they felt listened to, and relatives said they were involved in care planning and kept up to date.

Key recommendations included:

  • Continuing with planned refurbishment, especially on Ash Unit, to improve décor and dementia-friendly features.
  • Ensuring bathrooms and unused rooms are kept clean, well maintained, and not used for storage.
  • Improving signage and increasing contrast on doors and handrails to support orientation.
  • Keeping activity information easy to see, and ensuring regular engagement opportunities across both units.
  • Introducing a “You Said, We Did” board to show residents and families how feedback is acted upon.

Response from the Home

The management team welcomed the report and confirmed they were pleased with the findings. They highlighted that refurbishment work is already planned and will focus on updating communal areas, improving dementia-friendly features and refreshing older parts of the building. Staff training and supervision arrangements continue to be strengthened, and the team remain committed to providing safe, person-centred care.
