Trewan House

Healthwatch Halton carried out an Enter & View visit to Trewan House Care Home in Widnes in November 2025. Our team spent time observing day-to-day life in the home and speaking with residents and staff to understand people’s experiences, what is working well, and where small improvements could enhance comfort, independence and quality of life.

We found a calm, welcoming home with a caring atmosphere. Residents spoke positively about the care they receive and consistently described staff as kind, respectful and approachable. Many people told us they feel safe, listened to, and able to maintain aspects of their independence, including making choices about daily routines, food and activities.

The home was clean and well presented, with a good standard of décor throughout communal areas and bedrooms. Staff interactions were warm and reassuring, and staff themselves spoke positively about working at Trewan House, saying they feel supported and valued. Communal spaces were comfortable and residents particularly enjoyed the sensory room and social opportunities when activities were taking place.

Our visit also highlighted some areas where small improvements could further support residents’ experience. These included clearer step-free access to the building, stronger dementia-friendly signage and wayfinding, improved visibility of activities, and routine checks to ensure safety equipment and information displays are consistently in good order.

Key recommendations included:

  • Improve visibility and accessibility of the step-free entrance
  • Strengthen dementia-friendly signage and orientation cues
  • Increase visibility and consistency of activities in communal areas
  • Carry out routine checks on safety equipment and information displays

The home manager welcomed the report and provided context on several points raised during the visit. They confirmed that the entrance steps have been reviewed by health and safety contractors and the fire service, with no concerns identified. At the time of the visit, the activities coordinator was supporting residents at a church service, and senior staff were providing oversight across communal areas.

The home explained that heavy curtains in the main lounge are fire-retardant and used to support warmth and comfort. The management team thanked Healthwatch Halton for the visit and the constructive feedback, which will support ongoing improvements at Trewan House.
